This is a basic, essential tool for confirming wiring safety in your home. I noticed that the top half of an outlet was behaving abnormally, and this tool confirmed my suspicions in less than a minute. When I replaced the outlet, I broke it apart and found arcing scorch carbon on the contacts, a definite fire hazard.Do yourself a safety favor and buy one of these. I previously owned a basic GFCI tester (no display) and had great results. However, I found myself needing a bit of an upgrade so I could see the voltage readout for my outlets. This checked the box and is an absolute game changer for me. It had a better design, around the same size as the basic version, nice and bright display, but most important of all it is accurate. I can test GFCI outlets and get the voltage readout for any outlet in my home. It has helped me identify issues with lower voltage in some outlets and bad GFCI outlets. I recommend reading the instruction manual before using a device like this just to get accustomed to what it is telling you on the digital readout display. Overall, it comes from a quality brand, it is easy to use, so this is a must-have tool if you are working with electrical.

nice upgrade from the cheap trash testers
I’ve owned several “outlet testers” over the years but they’ve mostly been trash. Now that I have an attic to finish I needed to get something actually useful. After looking around I settled on this one, which is a kind of a middle of the road tester. In addition to the usual “you wired it up wrong!” idiot lights, it’s got things like line voltage display. I can also plug it into an outlet that’s in a hard to reach place, then pull it out and look at it to see if it’s good. It’s also slightly larger than the cheap junk, just the right size to fit comfortably in the hand and plug/unplug.I’m happy to have this in my electrical tool box, everyone that works on outlets should have one
