Roku is the best streaming device by far.
We have several different iterations of Roku devices but I had not purchased the “Stick” version for fear that they would perform similar to my first FireStick which had slow menu navigation and loading on top of poor Wifi signal. Despite this and due to the discontinuation of Express version I purchased our first Roku Stick and was pleasantly surprised. The menu navigation is no different or slower than using the more expensive Rokus like the Ultra and Express. The remote no longer has a 3.5mm audio jack for headphones nor does the stick itself have bluetooth capabilities however this isn’t an issue for us as the Roku app allows you to use your phone to stream the audio to whatever listening devices you want as long as the Roku Stick and your phone are connected to the same network. We haven’t had any issues with the Wifi speed even in the room furthest away from the primary router where previously our FireStick struggled. Its very possible the newer FireSticks have better Wifi as our FireStick was an early version. The Roku stick also does not support AirPlay so if you like the idea of streaming photos videos from your iPhone you might wanna spring for the more expensive version (my wife enjoys this feature). Outside these differences the experience is virtually identical to the more expensive devices.General Review of Roku ecosystem:Full disclosure my first experience with Amazons streaming devices and ecosystem are from the early days of FireSticks but we do use the Amazon app on our Roku currently. I do favor Roku’s devices and ecosystem overall.Roku requires a credit card upon device account setup however no charges are made unless you want to subscribe to a service or purchase content. Accounts contain information on all the devices, locations(for example:Roku Ultra:Office, Roku Express: Family Room, etc). Remotes when paired with the device are interchangeable between devices. When my kids loose the front room remote for our Ultra we just go grab the family room remote until we remember there is a remote locator feature which makes the remote itself ring so you can locate it.(not all devices?) Settings and controls features are pretty intuitive and allow you to customize your experience in a way I don’t recall on Amazon devices.Roku offers free content in the form of live streaming channels(usually with ads) and recognizable movies and shows on both their Roku Channel as well as their Roku kids channels. The interface allows you to customize your home screen channels/features. Roku feels like they want you to setup your environment as you like where Amazon feels geared towards selling you their movies and services. The fish tank screen saver doesn’t have ads and I don’t recall them being part of the city side scroller screen saver either. It just feels like less of a commercial ecosystem then Amazons in my opinion. The Roku app is absolutely amazing. It allows you to watch the same content as your devices so sometimes I will watch my favorite shows on my phone in bed, no additional apps required. It also acts as a remote for any of the Roku devices. The baked in streaming audio feature is a huge plus for me. I will sometimes watch a show on a TV but want to do chores throughout the rest of the house. I start the show, turn on the app, route the audio through my phone and listen to the show on my Bluetooth headphones while moving throughout the house. I rarely download apps of this nature but the features of the Roku app are absolutely one of the best features of the Roku ecosystem.Roku support was very helpful when one of my devices failed to update making the unit non functional. A phone call with support had them try to trouble shoot the unit before deeming the issue unresolved and they immediately sent me a brand new replacement. No RMA garbage, just a quick and painless warranty replacement.I am very happy with all my Roku devices, ecosystem and Roku brand and will continue to support them and recommend them to friends and family.
Not What I Expected –
Great Product and Alternative to Cable Receivers
I, like many others, have been beyond Frustrated with the exorbitant costs via junk fees that many companies, restaurants, establishments, etc… have been wrongfully and greedily imposing. Well, Spectrum Cable is no different! They claim that my bill is so high due to the legacy package I’m still on! This would be true, if when my mom came off the same plan, her “discounts” they claimed she’s now getting, were permanent and don’t sunset next May!!! So, I started to investigate how to get rid of their rental equipment. I already got rid of their modem and wireless router, years ago because they charge junk service fees, when the very nature and function of the devices is to do the things they’re charging for. I’m amazed they haven’t been sued for deceptive practices! I learned that the Roku actually had the Spectrum TV APP on there, as they’re affiliated! Now, Setting up the first Roku Does require some time, but that’s because you have to activate your streaming platforms, from your cable provider’s first, if you pay and or if you have for “free” streaming services from them (we’ll use this term very loosely) as from Spectrum, as their outrageously inflated bill suggests you’re paying for everything, they’re just hiding the fees. I also recommend that you have all your account emails and passwords ready so that after the Roku Is set up, you can associate the Apps on the device (HBO, Paramount, Netflix, Disney Plus, etc…). The device connects quickly to the wireless router, especially if you have a strong network signal. It took a relatively short time to figure out how to work the remote and the ability to speak to it via the mic made it super easy. This was a very inexpensive solution. The box even offers a way to obtain a friend HDMI extender from them, if you need it. This only comes into play if the location of your HDMI port on your TV limits the ability to connect the device on one or more of your HDMI ports.Once the first Roku and all my streaming platforms were set up it was super quick and simple to set up the second one. I will be returning their old receivers, probably swapping out my DVR box for a new one (I still like recording shows on the device) and look to save as much on my bill as possible.

Glad I got the Roku!
This is the best streaming device I’ve ever owned. The one I owned before from a different brand was fried when I lost power one night, and I decided on this Roku instead since it had such great reviews on another site that I looked at for opinions. I’m glad I did! It’s very easy to use. I was actually a little familiar with it, not going to lie, because my dad has a Roku TV and I help him with it sometimes! But it’s simple to learn, simple to set up the way you want, and there’s no intrusive ads on the screen. I don’t have to press many buttons to get to the app I want. The sound and video quality are just the same as my previous streaming stick as well as my PS4 so no issues there. I like that you can control the volume with the Roku remote….not being able to would probably be a deal breaker even though it seems so simple. It was also easy to set up to my Wifi, and I’ve never lost Wifi connection! The only real complaint I have about it is it doesn’t have a Twitch app from the actual company, but that’s ok, I don’t watch Twitch that much and can just use my computer if I need to.

This arrived last week and the early signs were very impressive. The streaming quality is superb here, despite me having a slow internet connection. My main complaint being that when streaming something quite lengthy, if you need to find out how much of it is still remaining, there’s no easy way to display the remaining time. And I’m finding that some streaming apps are expecting me to press buttons which simply don’t exist on Roku’s remote. I’ve contacted Roku Support (3 times) to ask if there’s an enhanced remote control unit available but they never reply. So I’m afraid I’ve downgraded my star rating.
